Modern Coins

Niue Island Editions“

It's nice to find that those in charge of minting currency abroad actually have a knack for marketing.

Take, for example, the silver coin pictured in this post – the first issue of Niue Island, near Australia, in 2020. It features a portrait of Her Majesty the Queen on the obverse, as usual, but the reverse is the reverse of a 1930 Australian penny (and this penny, for those who don't know, is considered the rarest Australian coin in circulation – perhaps comparable to legendary pieces likeSultan Fuad's Riyal (In Egypt, for example)

Therefore, the mint official knows very well that 99% of Australian collectors will never own the original penny, but they would most likely prefer this beautiful silver piece instead…

This year marks exactly one hundred years since the minting of Sultan Fuad's riyal, and I have no doubt that if the officials at the Egyptian Mint had decided to issue commemorative copies of the riyal (with some minor changes such as 2020 instead of 1920 and "Arab Republic of Egypt" instead of "Egyptian Sultanate"), they would have sold an enormous number of them.

We can only dream…
