Italy introduces a new 2-euro coin
The two designs aim to represent all healthcare professionals who have dedicated themselves to combating the coronavirus pandemic. Three million coins are expected to be minted by June 22 and are intended for general circulation. Italian Mint Medalist Claudia Momoni says, “It’s not easy to represent all healthcare workers with just two designs. I mean, it has to represent both a doctor and a nurse.” She adds, “Unfortunately, the surface area of the coin is limited, so it’s very difficult to represent everyone on such a small coin.” The full set comprises 15 themes inspired by history, art, sports, science, nature, Italian food, and wine. In 2021, Italy will commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death, as well as the 450th anniversary of Caravaggio’s birth, both on new 5 and 20 euro coins.
