Currency featuring King Charles' image will begin circulating in 2024.

These new banknotes are scheduled to enter circulation by mid-2024, alongside the existing notes featuring the late Queen. The first note to bear the image of the Queen, or any British monarch, was the £1 note issued in 1960.

The design of the banknotes will not change, but new banknotes will only be printed to replace worn-out notes and to meet any general increase in demand. Therefore, the banknotes featuring the late Queen and her son together will be issued simultaneously. The design of the banknotes, which includes historical figures, will remain unchanged, allowing them to be verified using existing security features. In line with the Royal Family's directives to minimize the environmental and financial impact of this change, new banknotes will only be printed to replace worn-out notes and to meet any general increase in demand. Consequently, the banknotes depicting the late Queen and her son together will be circulated at the same time.

Governor of the Bank of England

Speaking ahead of the release, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said: “I am very proud that the Bank is releasing the new banknote design which will feature the image of King Charles III. This is a significant moment, as the King is only the second monarch to appear on our banknotes. People will be able to use these new banknotes when they begin circulating in 2024.”.
