Chapter One

General Von Brausch gazed wistfully at his marshal's baton inside his tent. The sounds of heavy Soviet artillery explosions were very loud in the distance, but he did not listen to them, for his mind was preoccupied with the past… What had brought him to this accursed place?!
He remembered how he had risen through his own efforts until he attained the rank of general in the German army—unlike those clowns whom Hitler later appointed… He remembered how his noble father and grandmother had also been officers in the army and how they had triumphed over Germany's enemies in battles that history would immortalize in the First World War… He felt the golden oak leaves adorning his collar and realized that they—perhaps for the first time since he had worn them—were choking him… His eyes returned to the marshal's baton and what it represented, and he remembered its story with him and how he had acquired it…

July 1940

The baton, 50 cm long and 3.5 cm in diameter, is made of silver and covered in luxurious red velvet. It features 20 German eagles and 20 swastikas in a beautiful interplay, all crafted from solid gold. The ends bear silver rings engraved with the owner's name and the date in gold, while the bases, also made of gold, display the eagle and swastika emblems. Made by Europe's most skilled goldsmiths, it cost approximately 6,000 marks (around $35,000 USD in today's currency). This baton represents the pinnacle of glory and the dream of every officer in the German armed forces—the invincible army that triumphed over the most powerful armies in Europe in just two weeks...

The Marshal's train of thought is interrupted by the entrance of his private secretary, who performs the Nazi salute, "Heil Hitler, Meinfeld Marshal!" and hands him a new signal from Berlin, then leaves. Von Brausch opens it and reads its brief contents, then his fingers begin to tremble: "After careful consultations and a practical evaluation of your performance in the Russian theater of operations, we have decided to relieve you of your post immediately and without delay and to place you in service in the ranks of reserve officers - Signed: Adolf Hitler."“

The world swirls around the Field Marshal, and his hand slowly reaches for the luxurious cane. He feels it for a moment, then closes the box….

Later, Von Brausch would return to his home and never see Hitler's face again. After the fall of Germany, the Allied forces came and arrested the old man and put him in a detention camp in Wales in the British Isles. He died at the age of 67 in 1948 from complications of a severe case of bronchitis, without knowing that his beloved cane was now in the possession of the King of Egypt, Farouk I!
