Royal Tourism Cup

On my last visit to the Royal Jewelry Museum in Alexandria last year, I saw many beautiful pieces that looked very precious, but I was very sorry that the informational signs in the place did not quench my usual thirst for information. Today, by chance, I found important information about one of these pieces, which is the “Royal Tourism Cup”.”

Royal Tourism Cup

.The manufacture of this magnificent cup was completed in February 1950 after the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry announced its need for such a cup and 51 designs were submitted to it. The competent committee met and selected 8 designs that were submitted to the royal thresholds, “one of which received the supreme approval.” After that, the tenders committee met to examine the three bids for making the cup, which were 7,000 Egyptian pounds, 9,000 Egyptian pounds, and 11,000 Egyptian pounds respectively. The committee chose the least expensive one (and it is truly wonderful how much absolute transparency there was at that time, as the matter was presented in all its details to the citizens, and the magazines issued at that time took an interest in it). .

The bid was awarded to the “Yocheron” shop in Paris and its agents in Cairo, the “Dialdas” jewelry shop, who made it in just two months and delivered it before the deadline to the Weights and Measures Authority on February 16, 1950. The actual price of the cup at that time was 6,952 pounds, and it was made of gold.
