History of the Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera House Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman is the first opera house in the Arabian Gulf region and in the Arabian Peninsula, as Sultan Qaboos, the Sultan of the Sultanate of Oman, ordered its construction in 2001. Construction work on the building began in 2007 and it was opened on October 12, 2011.

The Royal Opera House is a multi-purpose building capable of hosting a variety of events, including operas, concerts, plays, conferences, and numerous cultural and artistic gatherings. Reflecting contemporary Omani architecture, the opera house has a maximum capacity of 1,100 people and comprises a concert theater, a formal hall and gardens, a cultural market with retail outlets and fine dining restaurants, and an arts center for musical, theatrical, and operatic productions.

The Royal Opera House is an architectural masterpiece built on 8 floors, 3 of which are underground and 5 are above ground. The opera house extends from the north of the site to the south, and the building is cut by two colonnades that extend on its eastern and western sides. It harmonizes Omani, Arab and Islamic architectural heritage in different eras. The Royal Opera House was built on a vast area of eighty thousand square meters, and the built area is more than twenty-five thousand square meters. The multi-purpose Royal Opera House building can host various events such as opera performances, concerts, theatrical performances, conferences and cultural and artistic gatherings.
