On December 13, 2021, the Central Bank announced to the public the issuance of a new twenty-ouguiya banknote to be put into circulation alongside the twenty-ouguiya coins that were issued in 2018. This banknote comes to diversify the group of banknotes currently in circulation that have legal tender power throughout the national territory.
New and elegant design
The new banknote highlights two symbolic landmarks of Mauritania. On the front of the note is the Grand Mosque of Kaédi, located in the south of the country, which is considered the oldest mosque in Mauritania, as it was built around 1366 AH and is predominantly in the Sudanese coastal architectural style prevalent in most of the old Islamic cities in the sub-Saharan Africa region.
On the back of the sheet, the geological marvel of Guelb Errichât, located in the north of the country, is shown. The unique shape of this landmark and its visibility from outer space have made it famous as the ”Eye of Africa,” also known as Guelb Errichât. .
Given the importance of the new banknote and in order to highlight the artistic design elements it contains, the same dimensions as the fifty-ounce banknote were chosen for it.
Maintaining the same security elements
The new twenty-ounce banknotes were designed with the same attention to detail and craftsmanship as the series of banknotes in circulation since 2018. Like the other banknotes, the new note gains security features such as AURORA™ transparent windows, tactile raised lettering, color-changing ink, and a half-window displaying a crescent and star.
Canadian Bank Note Company has printed the 20-ouguiya banknote using a polymer security layer with CCL Secure's GUARDIAN™ technology. The Director of Research, Development, Marketing and Design at CCL Secure stated: “We are delighted to have worked closely with the Central Bank of Mauritania and their printing partner, Canadian Bank Note Company, on this latest addition to their banknote collection.”.
