What will happen to the Expo 2020 coins?
Expo 2020 is an international Expo exhibition, which was scheduled to be hosted in the Emirate of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates during the period from October 20, 2020 to April 10, 2021. However, due to the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic and based on the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) to cancel any conferences or celebrations for fear of increasing the spread of the virus, the exhibition was postponed to the period from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
The Emirate of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates began preparing to host this event on November 27, 2013. Dubai was declared the winner of the right to host Expo 2020 after Dubai outperformed Sao Paulo, Brazil, Yekaterinburg, Russia, and Izmir, Turkey in the vote, having received the support of 116 of the 164 voting members of the Bureau in a final runoff against Yekaterinburg.
To document this global event, the Central Bank of the UAE issued a limited number of Commemorative coins marking Expo 2020 Dubai This was in July 2020, but since this event was postponed, the current coins will no longer have any significance regarding the date on which they were issued, especially after the postponement.
Although it was expected that a large number of the issue would be sold among enthusiasts and those interested, on the contrary, those coins accumulated in the Royal New Zealand Mint, which is the mint responsible for manufacturing those coins. It also resorted to providing discounts for some pieces and offers to facilitate the sale of the remaining quantities for the occasion that did not happen. We mention to you in detail the pieces that were minted specifically for that occasion.

What will become of those coins? Will the UAE Central Bank end up minting new coins bearing a new date for the event, or will these coins remain as they are, reminding us in the future of the event that did not happen in the same year it was scheduled for, and stirring in our minds the painful memory of the global pandemic that brought the world to a standstill?
This is what the coming days will reveal to us about Expo 2020, which is scheduled to take place at the end of this year.
