The Central Bank of Syria issues a new 2000 Syrian pound banknote.
The Central Bank of Syria issued a new 2,000 Syrian pound banknote today in an attempt to reduce the amount of cash circulating in the Syrian market after the Syrian pound's exchange rate plummeted from 50 pounds to the dollar to more than 500 pounds currently due to the war that has been raging in Syria for more than six years. Some experts believe that the disappearance of the old, smaller denominations will lead to higher prices for inexpensive goods, as consumers will primarily want to reduce the value of small denominations if larger denominations become widely circulated. Conversely, the continued issuance of smaller denomination banknotes will maintain the value of low-priced goods and prevent price increases.
