Model of the Aswan Dam, 1939

Aswan Reservoir

Aswan Reservoir or Aswan Dam It differs from the Aswan High Dam. Construction began in Aswan, southern Egypt, between 1899 and 1906. Its foundation stone was laid by Khedive Abbas Hilmi II, and it was inaugurated during his reign. The Aswan Reservoir is located 946 kilometers from the Delta Barrages, also known as the Delta Barrages. The old Aswan Dam was the first dam built of its size and the largest dam in the world at the time. It was raised in 1912 and again in 1926 to impound water during the Nile flood season, releasing it in the quantities needed for irrigation during the dry season.

Following the recent raising of the reservoir by McDonald's, including design and construction (McDonald's & Co.), the reservoir now measures 1,950 meters in length, with the water level 36 meters above the original riverbed. The reservoir serves as the main transportation route between Aswan city and the airport.

One of the most magnificent pieces (if we may use this description) is a model of the Aswan Dam made of pure silver, presented to King Farouk as a gift on January 25, 1939. It represents the three stages of building and raising the dam (1902, 1912 and 1933).
The model was made to a scale of 1/200 and includes realistic details of the gates. The model's floor is engraved with the Egyptian state emblem and a dedication in the following words (according to what I was able to read/translate):

Commemorative plaque honoring His Majesty King Farouk I on the occasion of laying the foundation stone for the second raising of the Aswan Dam, presented by Topham, Jones & Rayleton and Abboud Pasha on 5 Dhu al-Hijjah 1357 AH, corresponding to 25 January 1939.

Model size

The model measures approximately 24 x 53 x 27 cm and was sold in 2014 for one hundred thousand US dollars at auction. Heritage!

Other souvenirs from the event

As for ordinary collectors like myself, there are commemorative medals issued to mark the occasion, and regular 100-millime stamps appeared in the same year bearing the image of the young king with the treasury behind him after the completion of the third phase... The image of the king was changed in the stamps issued in 1947 in what became known as the “Farouk Marshal” series.
