Four new postage stamps to highlight traditional Omani music

Oman Post, an ASYAD Group company, has launched four interactive stamps showcasing Al-Maydan, one of Oman’s oldest and most prestigious art forms in traditional poetry and music. These stamps celebrate the Sultanate’s rich musical heritage, each highlighting a specific theme, including the performance itself, the poet and the singer, some of the instruments used in Al-Maydan, and the art form in general. The launch of these new stamps was a collaboration with the Oman Centre for Traditional Music, part of the Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science at the Royal Court, and featured the work of Omani artists Mohammed Al-Maamari, Sami Al-Siyabi, Fahad Al-Maamari, and Salem Al-Salami.
Commenting on this, Rashad bin Mansour Al Wahibi, Director of Stamps at Oman Post, said: “'Al-Midan' is the art of evening gatherings and wordplay in Arabic within a sophisticated poetic framework, where friends gather in villages and cities to recite verses of poetry and sing to the rhythm and melodies of traditional Omani music. It is also one of the arts engraved in the minds and hearts of the millennial generation, and therefore we at Oman Post were keen to celebrate it and remind everyone of its splendor and its integral role in the culture of current and future generations.’.
