The story of the design of Egyptian currency during the reign of King Farouk

One of the most enjoyable things we have read in a while… Percy Metcalfe’s handwritten memoirs (Metcalfe is the artist who was chosen to sculpt and design the shape of King Farouk’s coins), in which he explains the details of his meeting with the King and with the head of his office, «Ahmed Hassanin Pasha,» in addition to the modifications that the King himself made to the design and how the initial design looked, which the King rejected.

Do you remember a time when you walked down a road not wanting to go anywhere, but simply wanting the journey itself?
Are you one of those who, when holding a coin, let their imaginations wander to those who held it before you, how many cities that coin visited, and how many events it witnessed?
Have you ever wished that coins could speak and tell you what they witnessed on their journeys?

Basra Philatelic and Numismatic Library

In November 2015, I met Professor Abdul Wahab Al-Khafaji. He was the first person I met from the Basra enthusiasts, and from the beginning, the man was very cooperative and loved to help.
The idea of establishing the library came from Haj Abdul Wahab, who wanted Al-Farahidi Street to be a place for hobbyists to meet and talk. After it started with three people, over time the number of hobbyists increased day by day until it became the main gathering place for us hobbyists to meet, talk, and exchange stamps and coins.

Lundy Island

The hobby of collecting coins has many different pleasures. A coin is not just a piece of metal or paper, but it carries a history of the past, a memory of the present, or a vision of the future. When you hold a coin that has passed through people's hands and read the history written on it, you wonder who held it before it reached you? Many people, perhaps princes, kings, princesses, and beauties. And how many deals were made in which this piece was a part, from buying sweets for a child to play or part of an arms deal for a massive army. Perhaps it was part of the wages in building a mosque or a church, or perhaps it was on a gambling table and under the feet of dancers. .

Silver coins of Al-Zahir Baybars

Al-Zahir Baybars is considered the true founder of the Mamluk Sultanate and its greatest sultan, and one of the greatest sultans and leaders in all of Islamic history. He was one of the Mamluks of Sultan al-Salih Najm al-Din Ayyub and rose to prominence during al-Salih's wars in Syria against those who rebelled against his rule. Later, during the reign of his predecessor Turan Shah, he succeeded in capturing King Louis IX of France at Mansoura in 647 AH/1249 CE. When Turan Shah attempted to eliminate the Mamluks, Baybars managed to kill him. After the victory at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 658 AH/1260 CE against the Mongol army, he eliminated al-Muzaffar Qutuz and assumed rule over Egypt and Syria.

“The jinn” raises the value of “Abu Jamalin” in the rare Egyptian currency market

An inexplicable race among collectors of old coins, whose goal is to obtain «Abu Gamalein,» the first Egyptian paper pound, issued in January 1899. Some are driven by a passion for acquiring old coins and stamps, while others are motivated by vague ambitions to buy it, in pursuit of endless rumors that whoever carries that paper can open an ancient tomb, summon genies, and cure incurable diseases.

Calligraphy on Islamic Coins

Western coinages in the Hellenistic tradition are praised for the beauty of their images perfectly complementing the circular space. The art of the portrait flowered in particular in the Hellenistic world, the early Roman Empire, and then again a millennium later in the Renaissance
