We find that the forger invents a method to deceive the amateur, then the amateur takes precautions, so the forger resorts to a new trick that deceives some amateurs for a while until it is exposed, and so on… an eternal struggle between the two sides.

Today we will discuss (from a technical and artistic standpoint) a trick that has emerged in recent months among Egyptian resident coin collectors. The purpose of this presentation is first and foremost to protect the hobby of kings and not to defame names. .

The coin in question (a 1916 10 milliemes coin without the letter H, with a truly impressive grade of 64) was listed on eBay a few months ago and sold for 40,001 TP4T to a collector. Upon receiving it, the collector noticed that although the packaging and capsule were intact, and the certificate of authenticity (which confirmed the coin's serial number on the company's website was also valid—it was indeed a 1916 10 milliemes coin without the letter H and with a grade of 64, the highest possible rating for this coin) the coin itself appeared slightly different from the one shown on the company's website. Its color seemed darker, and upon examining the reverse, the letter H was visible, suggesting that someone had previously attempted to obscure it. Had the company misgraded the coin? It's possible; appraisers are human, and humans often make mistakes. Perhaps the coin was mistakenly classified as lacking the H. But why does it appear to be in a condition closer to AU 53, which is far removed from MS 64? The company was contacted, and the images were compared—the right image is from the company's website, while the left image is of the coin that reached the collector. Several observations were noted:

1) The four claws in the internal holder that hold the piece have a bend that never occurs in the original capsules.

2) There are significant differences in the locations of the capsule's sealing ("riveting") between the image on the website and the actual piece.

3) The holographic label design is completely different on the back of the capsule.

4) The difference in the currency itself, as mentioned previously.

5) Several other differences that we prefer to keep to ourselves for the time being

After discussions with the company, we arrived at a theory that might explain what happened:

The seller possesses a genuine coin and has already sent it for appraisal, where it received a score of 64. Upon the return of the appraised coin to the seller, the capsule is professionally broken, or a counterfeit capsule resembling NGC capsules is used. Upon opening the capsule, the genuine coin is replaced with another 10-millime coin (of poor condition, worth no more than $150 at most), while the original certificate, internal holder, etc., are retained. The capsule is then resealed carefully so that it appears perfectly intact at first glance. Meanwhile, the seller resends the undamaged coin for re-appraisal. The coin is offered for sale using images of the original coin, relying on the fact that most collectors—unfortunately—care far more about the certificate and score than the coin itself.

Unfortunately, several counterfeit Egyptian coins of this type have surfaced recently. However, the overall situation remains relatively stable, especially after collaboration between collectors and appraisal companies to identify these coins. The magazine "Al-Muqtan Al-Arabi" urges collectors to carefully examine any appraised coins purchased in recent months, comparing them to the image held by the appraisal company to ensure their authenticity.

Since its inception, "The Arab Collector" magazine has taken upon itself the task of warning enthusiasts about counterfeiting methods in the world of hobbies, such as stamps and medals, as well as in the field of coins, where a number of counterfeit pieces have proliferated, such as those that circulated for a time on Chinese websites, in addition to those that appear from time to time on eBay.
