There are lots with two, three, or even nine medals, so the total is 160 gold medals with a total weight of 14,802 grams, which is slightly less than 15 kilograms of gold!

At today’s prices – assuming that the average gold content in all the medals is 21 (meaning that the weight of pure gold is 12,951 grams), we find that the collection of Egyptian commemorative gold medals, in gold only and without regard to their historical or artistic value, rarity factors, condition, or the fact that their previous owner was King Farouk, is worth more than 10 million and a quarter million Egyptian pounds today.

Never mind that some of the pieces are extremely rare, some have never been seen at all, and some were made only once specifically for the king, such as the medal commemorating the birth of Crown Prince Ahmed Fouad and the anniversary of King Farouk's visit to the Royal Police College in 1941. Some of them are for lesser-known occasions, such as the Arab Music Conference, a medal issued on the occasion of the distribution of land to the peasants (which the July Movement recorded as one of its ideas), the opening of the Kafr El-Zayat Eye Hospital, and the opening of a water desalination plant in Fayoum!

It is noteworthy that the collection does not include any Egyptian medals predating the reign of King Fuad, suggesting that the medals of Khedive Abbas Hilmi, for example, were returned to him as his personal property after his deposition, whether by Sultan Hussein, King Fuad, or even King Farouk. Similarly, there are no gold medals belonging to Khedive Ismail. This partially explains King Farouk's request to have his own collections returned to him after his deposition, following a precedent set in Egypt's history.

The author of this post attempted to imagine the shapes of gold medals using Photoshop and based on online images of silver and bronze coins, as well as old books and magazines – the images attached to this post – but many, many more could not be found. Perhaps this post is a desperate attempt to document a portion of Egypt's looted treasures…

Please, anyone who has pictures of some of the missing items, comment in the comments or contact Al-Muqtani Al-Arabi magazine directly.

The terms in brief:

2654: Fuad I, International Tourism Conference 1933; 2655: Fuad I, King's Visit to Belgium 1927; 2656: Fuad I, Opening of Alexandria Stadium 1929; 2657: Fuad I, King's Visit to Germany; 2658: Fuad I, Alexandria City Council 1924; 2659: Fuad I, Visit to Czechoslovakia 1929; 2660: Fuad I, International Navigation Conference 1926; 2661: Fuad I, Visit to France 1927; 2662: Fuad I, Locust Control Conference 1936; 2663: Fuad I, International Postal Conference 1934; 2664: Fuad I, Visit to Italy 1927; 2665: Fuad I, Repeat of Previous Item, Different Weight; 2666: Fuad I, Proclamation of the Kingdom of Egypt 1922; 2667: Fuad I, Visit to Britain 1927; 2668: Fuad I, 50th Meeting of the National Judiciary 1933 2669: Fuad I's visit to Mahalla in 1931 and his visit to Tanta in 1931, and Farouk I's end of the Mixed Courts system in 1949 (3 medals). 2670: Fuad I's visit to the Arabic Language Academy in 1933, the Egyptian Olympic Committee's medal in 1918, and the marriage of Prince Umberto and Princess Marie in 1930 (3 medals). 2671: Fuad I's International Cotton Conference in 1927, and Prince Farouk's medal from the Sporting Club in Alexandria (2 medals). 2672: Fuad I's return to Cairo in 1929, the French Legion's medal to the King in 1927, and an English medal (3 medals). 2673: Fuad I's medal from the workers of the Orlyken Company in 1929. 2674: Fuad I's visit to the Tora factories. 2675: Fuad I laying the foundation stone for the port of Minya and visiting...
